Hello Connect Run Club Readers,
My name is Dawn Garland and I am the new o-fish-al women's running blogger for the Connect Run Club. Many of you are probably wondering "Who is this chick?" Well here is a little bit about me. I was born and raised in Florida then moved to Georgia to attend college. After a very short stint living in Alabama, I moved back to Georgia and have been here since 2002.
I started running about 3 years ago. I was not born a natural athlete. I wasn't on the track team or cross country team. To be honest, my favorite saying used to be "The only way I'll run is if something big is chasing me or if there are cupcakes in front of me." Then, I saw a photo of myself 3 years ago and didn't like what I saw. I decided I didn't want to look like that anymore.
I started small using the Couch to 5K app. I ran 5K's. I got my shirts and I thought that would be enough. Then I decided to train for my first 10K. When I completed that, I was amazed! I had just run 6 miles. How was that possible? I made a new friend who was also interested in getting in better shape and he and I became "running buddies". We challenged each other and ran races together. We stopped running 5K's and only ran 10K's then we tackled a 15K. In April of this year, I ran my first half marathon at the Chick-Fil-A Half Marathon here in Athens, Georgia.
While successfully training for my second half marathon earlier this summer, I got injured. I had to take 6 weeks off of running completely. For someone like me, that is tantamount to starting from scratch. I am back to running only 3 and 4 miles at a time. Rather than let this frustrate me, I am choosing to be grateful for every run that I get to have. Currently, I am in training for a 15K in January again. This will be my "comeback race". I have also already registered for the 2nd Chick-fil-A Connect Half Marathon next April in Athens.
Wondering what you can expect from me in the coming blog entries? It'll be a little bit of everything from training updates, running gear suggestions, recipes that I've discovered, and maybe even some beauty tips and tricks. Want to get in touch with me? Feel free to follow me on Twitter- @RelucRunner or shoot me an email at email@example.com.
Thanks and happy running, y'all!
